Pueblo Rescue Mission raising money for new van

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pueblo Rescue Mission is asking the community for help in raising money to buy a new van.

The rescue mission says its current van is outdated and can't accommodate all of its clients. The van is about 20 years old, doesn't have a wheelchair lift for handicapped clients, and isn't able to accommodate those with special needs. There's also no air conditioning or heater.

The rescue mission says they use the van between two and five times a day to help get clients to different appointments. Every day, the organization is transporting people to different places, like the social security office, court, the VA, and other places of need.

Right now, they're having to call and ask around for transportation that will work for their clients.

Melanie Rapier, the executive director for the Pueblo Rescue Mission, says they do get grants, but they're all mostly reimbursable.

"We work on a bare-bones budget. It’s not often that I have 20 thousand or 25 thousand dollars sitting around to put out money for a vehicle and then wait for the entity to reimburse me for those funds. Whatever I have right now I need to use to keep the shelter open," said Rapier.

The rescue mission has also started group programming and wants to be able to bring homeless people who aren't living there to its facility as well.

The Pueblo Rescue Mission's goal is to raise $20,000. To donate, visit their GoFundMe page.
