Pueblo Police: suspicious death now homicide investigation, suspect in custody

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pueblo Police Department confirmed a suspicious death is now being investigated as a homicide.

Monday, police were dispatched to the 1500 block of N. Lacross Ave. just after 4:15 p.m. on reports of a body in the area.

The Pueblo County Coroner's Office later identified that victim as 51-year-old Anthony Ray Valdez.

According to the coroner's office, Valdez was found in a garage with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, detectives determined Valdez's death was a homicide.

The PPD says a suspect was detained after a foot chase along the Fountain Creek Tuesday evening.

The suspect, 36-year-old James Matthew Tafoya, faces numerous charges including 1st Degree Murder, Prohibited Use of a Weapon, and Vehicular Eluding.
