COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado is honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's legacy by hosting 100 volunteers on Monday at Colorado Springs and Pueblo Distribution Center throughout the day. The Southern Colorado community is joining forces with thousands of other people nationwide to honor this national day of service.

Volunteer groups along with individuals and families will help the food bank by sorting and packing thousands of pounds of food, according to the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorados' news release. The food will be sent to neighboring food pantries and meal sites expanding across Southern Colorado.

Care and Share Food Bank's goal is to make sure no family goes hungry.

“We’re answering Dr. King’s call to serve, and the volunteers who are at the food bank today are making a difference in the lives of neighbors across Southern Colorado,” said Lynne Telford, CEO of Care and Share Food Bank.

“Volunteer service is a powerful tool, and when neighbors work together, we can build stronger communities. We certainly wouldn’t be able to do our work without our volunteers who take action year-round.”

The Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado says the national service day is currently at full capacity from volunteers able to sign up in advance.

Volunteers will be at Care and Share's Colorado Springs Distribution Center on Monday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and again from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Care and Share ships out over 25 million pounds of food to 276 partner agencies every year across 31 counties in Southern Colorado.
