Fort Carson soldier crowned Miss Colorado raises mental health awareness on road to Miss America

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Fort Carson Army Specialist Maura Spence has been crowned Miss Colorado in June to become the first active military soldier to hold the state title.

The 21-year-old beauty queen is a fighter, a soldier, and all-around mental health activist. At a young age, she's already breaking the social stigma of what it is to be a woman and a soldier and she wants to spread awareness on mental health.

Maura Spence Carroll is strong and confident. Her love for her country goes beyond serving in the military, she wants to fight to make mental health a priority, especially for service members and veterans.

In Maura's case, she feels as if her life has been a puzzle she's been trying to piece together for 20 years. Though she's now 21, she says she realized she had found the missing piece to her puzzle when she was diagnosed with ADHD October of last year.

Spence works as an intelligence analyst and was awarded a $7,500 scholarship, according to the Miss America organization. This year’s Miss America pageant is scheduled for December in Connecticut.
