Steelworkers union gives update on Evraz mill explosion in Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) - Three workers are still recovering in the hospital after an explosion at the Evraz Steel Mill in Pueblo.

The steelworkers union representing a number of the victims in Saturday's explosion gave an update on their medical conditions early Sunday. Local 2102 posting on their Facebook page that seven people were transported to the hospital and one person went on their own. As of now, five workers have been treated and released but three remain hospitalized. Two workers are in the ICU and another was transferred to a burn unit in Denver.

Fire crews were called to the Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel Mill off Indiana Ave around 6:00 p.m. after they say a furnace used to melt steel scraps exploded. According to Assistant Fire Chief Keith Miller of the Pueblo Fire Department, the explosion of this kind is a "rare event."

The explosion is still under investigation.
