COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police confirm a man died after a car accident that happened last Friday, November 20.

Police say a black Nissan Xterra and a silver Mercury Mountaineer were both driving westbound on East Unitah Street in the same lane. The Xterra slowed down to make a left-hand turn but the Mountaineer was unable to stop and veered to the left in an attempt to avoid rear-ending the Xterra.

The Mountaineer sideswiped the Xterra before driving off the road and hitting a tree.

Police identified the Mountaineer driver as Armando O. Diaz, 43, of Colorado Springs. Diaz was taken to a nearby hospital and ultimately died Saturday, November 21, due to his injuries.

Police say Diaz was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Excessive speed or impairment are not considered factors in this case, according to CSP.

The driver of the Xterra was unharmed. This is an ongoing investigation.
