Dangerous road conditions continue as residential streets stay icy

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning drivers of continued dangers on the roadways after Monday's snowstorm.

The department says they continued to have about 100 plows on the road Tuesday; the same amount they had on the day of the storm.

“Today is one of those days you don’t let your guard down, especially with the bitter, bitter cold temperatures, we’re still going to see icy spots ... with bridges on-ramps and off-ramps," says Michelle Peulen, communications manager for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The Colorado Springs Public Works and Maintenance Division, who treats side streets and residential roads in the region, say neighborhoods won't be plowed unless they got six inches or more of snow.

Many communities are now forced to play the waiting game and hope the sun clears up what city crews won’t.

Even when the snow melts, side streets and highways still may not be safe.

“Slush is one of the most dangerous conditions we can run into," says Peulen. "It can grab your tires, and you can really lose traction from the road.”

Ultimately, CDOT is just asking for your help heading into the winter season.

“We saw folks going way too fast for conditions, that leads to crashes, that leads to slide-offs,” says Peulen. "That takes away our resources clearing roadways 'cause they have to answer those calls.”

The Colorado Springs Public Works and Maintenance Division says though they won't be treating neighborhood streets, they will be working on clearing ice from secondary roads.
