PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- Pueblo County and the city of Pueblo weren't spared from the unusually timed snows. However, it was the mountain communities like Beulah and Rye that received the brunt of the storm.

Wednesday morning in Rye resembled January more than early September.

According to the National Weather Service, Beulah and Rye received more than 9 inches of snow.

“I was sitting at my table and playing cards. Just watching the snow come," said Rye Resident Debra Willis. "I thought oh it won’t last very long, the sun's out. But it just kept going and going.”

Despite having to break out their shovels a little early this year, the people of Rye are more than happy to welcome the snow.

“People around here, I’m sure, have wells that are going dry and a lack of water," said Rye resident Larry Phillips. "We are so dry and need the moisture desperately. It’s just been the driest season I’ve seen up here in thirteen years.”

Due to all the snow, Pueblo County District 70 was forced to close its mountain schools like Rye High School. However, because D70 was already learning remotely for COVID-19 health precautions, classes were able to continue online.
