Woman found dead near Woodland Park identified decades later

Becky Redeker

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Rebecca "Becky" Ann Redeker has been identified as the young woman found dead at a campsite between Woodland Park and Deckers 27 years ago.

On June 15th, 1993, deputies were called to a "makeshift campsite" where remains of what was believed to be a 20-year-old woman were found, but until Thursday morning, they had never been identified.

"Obviously there's a lot more work to be done but I'm confident that we'll find more with the public's help how she got there and what happened to her," said Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth. She was a young detective when Redeker went missing.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said Thursday morning that Redeker was found near Rainbow Creek Falls, which is on the southern tip of Douglas County, bordering El Paso and Teller Counties.

"The way Becky was found, we were unable to do a facial photograph, we were unable to share that," Spurlock explained.

It's believed Redeker spent more of her young life in Colorado Springs and Woodland Park. She's believed to have attended Manitou Springs and Coronado high schools in the late 1980s.

After years of trying to identify her, Redeker's DNA was submitted to a genealogy database. The detective in charge of investigating the cold case says the sample came back with thousands of near matches, but the closest one was a fourth cousin.

After sampling several family trees, she was able to find Redeker's mother and brother. They have since moved out of the state, but are cooperating with the investigation.

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone who recognized Redeker in the pictures or knows who she might have associated with before she died is asked to call in.
