D70 parents calling for choice through petition

Pueblo county petition

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- A new petition is calling on Pueblo County School District 70 to be a bit more like Pueblo School District 60.

The petition, started by parents of students, is titled 'D70 My Child, my choice'. The petition criticizes D70's decision to hold off on in-person learning, and begin the 2020-21 school year with online at home learning until COVID-19 case numbers lower in Pueblo County.

The petition argues that parents in District 70 overwhelming approve a return to the classrooms.

"The [D70] Board has effectively stripped parents of this choice in determining that our kids only have an online option available," said the authors of the petition.

According to the authors of the petition, D70's reopening plan during the pandemic should mirror D60's. Pueblo School District 60 voted to allow parents to chose whether or not they wish to return to the classrooms or continue their educations from home.

So far, the petition has more than 500 signatures and is aiming for one thousand.

Pueblo County School District 70 declined to comment on the petition to KRDO until they speak on the matter at Tuesday's online board meeting. They expect the authors of the petition to speak during public comment.
