AURORA, Colo. (KRDO) — Police are investigating a shooting in Aurora Saturday night that happened during a protest over the death of Elijah McClain.

Protesters initially gathered outside the Aurora Police Department headquarters. They then walked down Alameda Avenue and onto I-225, causing the highway to close.

According to tweets from the Aurora Police Department, protesters were were walking on I-225 when a vehicle drove through the crowd.

Police said while the car was driving, a protester shot a gun and hit at least one other protester. That person was taken to the hospital in a stable condition.

Another person showed up at the hospital with a graze wound, according to police. The vehicle was towed. Police are asking witnesses to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).

Around 9 p.m., a group tore down the fence surrounding the police headquarters.

Aurora Police declared the protest an "unlawful assembly" and asked people to leave the area.

Police said in a tweet that the protesters were no longer peaceful. The tweet said protesters were throwing objects, shining lasers, and shooting large fireworks at officers.

Protesters also broke windows to the courthouse, went inside and started a fire in an office, according to police.

The crowd started leaving the area around 10 p.m.

Elijah McClain died after police and other first responders tried to detain him while responding to a call about a suspicious person. Officers used a carotid hold on him, and first responders gave him the sedative ketamine.

He went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

McClain died three days later on August 27th, 2019. A coroner’s report said the cause of his cause of death was inconclusive.

All of the officers involved were cleared of wrong-doing. Recent Black Lives Matter protests and outcry on social media have reignited the call for a second investigation into McClain's death.

Governor Jared Polis has appointed Phil Weiser, the attorney general of Colorado, as the special prosecutor for an investigation into Elijah McClain's death.
