Pueblo police investigate early morning officer-involved shooting

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) - Pueblo police are on the scene of a fatal officer-involved shooting.

Capt. Kenny Rider says an officer located a stolen vehicle on 4th St. and Reading Ave. around 2:30 a.m. Friday. That officer initiated a traffic stop, and at some point during the stop the driver began to drag the officer. We're told the officer fired shots into the vehicle, striking the male driver and a female passenger.

The driver was declared dead at the scene. The passenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The officer sustained minor injuries and will be placed on administrative leave per standard protocol. This is the third officer-involved shooting in Pueblo in 2020.

The Tenth Judicial District Critical Incident Team is now handling the investigation. The identity of the driver will be released by the Pueblo County Coroner. Stay with KRDO Newschannel 13 for the latest information.
