Police say a man who was causing a disturbance bit one officer and tried to bite another

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Colorado Springs Police said a man bit an officer and attempted to bite another while they tried to stop him from causing a disturbance downtown.

The officers were called to the disturbance near Tejon St. and Bijou St. around 9:30 Tuesday morning. When they got there, they tried to verbally de-escalate the situation. 

Police said the man continued being disorderly. When the officers tried to take him into custody he began to fight them. 

The officers said that’s when he bit one of them and attempted to bite another. According to police, he also tried to reach for one officer's gun while it was holstered. 

The officers tased the man and were eventually able to take him into custody.

Police identified him as Mitchell Highsmith. He was charged with Second Degree Assault on a Peace Officer, Attempted Second Degree Assault on a Peace Officer, Attempt to Disarm a Police Officer and Disorderly Conduct.
