Dismissal times for five D70 schools pushed back due to snow days

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Some Pueblo School District 70 schools will be adding more time to the school day in order to make up for lost time earlier in the 2019-2020 school year.

The lost time was mostly because of snow days and delays, but there was also a water main break and a security threat.

“We'll add 15 minutes over the span of 45 days, which is what we have left of the school year," said Todd Seip with Pueblo School District 70. "This adds almost a full day back into our calendar. So it doesn’t necessarily fix the entire problem, but it gives us a little bit of breathing room so that we can make it to the end of the year and still meet those minimum hours authorized by the CDE (Colorado Department of Education).”

The extra minutes will add enough hours into the school year to keep the district in compliance with the minimum number of hours mandated to the Colorado Department of Education.

So far this school year, mountain schools in Rye and Colorado City have missed a total of eight school days, while two Pueblo West schools have missed six.

The changes in schedule go into effect Monday, March 9.

The new ending time for Rye High School, Carver Middle School, and Skyview Middle School will be 3:45 p.m.; while 3:20 p.m. is the new dismissal time for Rye Elementary. Cedar Ridge Elementary will get out at 3:15 p.m.

Bus drop-off times will be pushed back 10-15 minutes depending on the school.

The district already added time to some of the schools last month, adding 5-10 minutes. However, after recent snowstorms, the district was forced to push back dismissal times even further.

If there are more snow delays, D70 says it's looking at a Friday in May as a possible day to make up for more lost time. The district says they'll make that decision by April 8.
