COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Rep. Doug Lamborn of Congressional District 5 is back in Colorado Springs Wednesday ahead of President Donald Trump's arrival for a campaign rally Thursday.

Lamborn, who's up for re-election this year, is hoping the visit will help a Republican win across the state.

"Any Republican victory in the state of Colorado has to start in Colorado Springs. We are the Republican stronghold for the state," Lamborn said.

He's held the seat for more than 10 years, but admits the makeup of voters is changing across the state, including in El Paso County.

Colorado Secretary of State registration numbers show more than 40,000 people have registered to vote since 2015.

In January 2020, unaffiliated voters held the majority over the number of registered Republicans and Democrats.

"It shows that Republicans have to make their message resonate with 51-plus percent of the people and those who are unaffiliated or independent, have to make sure the message is getting across to them," Lamborn said.

Having the President in town, Lamborn says, is key.

"This will be a great rally point for Republicans. We have a big election coming up."

Congressman Lamborn has been a supporter of President Trump through his time in office, despite military funding getting shifted to the border wall along the U.S. Mexico border.

Rep. Mac Thornberry, a Texas Republican who is the ranking member House Armed Services Committee, that Lamborn also serves on, called the shifting of funds 'unconstitutional.'

Today, Lamborn said, it's for a good cause.

"I disagree with the Chairman of the committee, a Democrat, when he says that was unconstitutional to take defense money and put it into the border wall because the border wall is national security," he said. "When you look at the drugs, human trafficking, things like that, that's security also."

KRDO also asked the Congressman why he voted against the 'Safe Banking Act,' a bill that allows cannabis businesses to use federal banks, even though it's backed by Colorado Senator Cory Gardner (R).

"I'm not wanting to make things so easy that the problem gets bigger," said Lamborn, a longtime opponent of marijuana legalization. "There's a social cost involved with that. Until we are dealing with the social fallout of the legalization of recreational marijuana, I don't want to see it expand and expand until we get those things resolved. And they're not yet resolved."

According to BallotPedia, five Democratic candidates will be voted on in the congressional primary election, one of whom will campaign against Lamborn.

The Congressman is going into the Republican primary unopposed.
