COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Three adults, four children and two dogs were left without a home after a house fire broke out in a neighborhood near Palmer Park.

Crews were called to the 1300 block of Bennett Ave., just before 6:30 a.m. Friday. This is near the intersection of Palmer Park Blvd. and N. Circle Dr. As of 8:20 a.m.

Initial reports of a blast sparked the phone call to the Colorado Springs Fire Department. When they arrived on scene, the noticed the right side of the home, where the gas meter is located, was completely engulfed in flames.

CSFD firefighters allowed the flames to continue to burn in order to use up the gas fuel, and allow time for Colorado Springs Utilities to get on scene and shut off the gas lines.

Investigators are working to figure out what caused this fire.

Firefighters generally turn off the gas supply immediately. But when the fire is at the place where they normally turn it off, they had little option but to wait it out. Good decision, even though it may have resulted in a bit more damage to the home…
