Elite CrossFit athletes train at same gym in Colorado Springs

CROSSFIT

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - There might be something in the water at one gym in Colorado Springs.

CrossFit Decimate can't seem to stop cranking out world-class athletes. Several guys are getting ready for the CrossFit Games, the biggest competition in the sport.

On the outside, CrossFit may seem a bit intimidating. But Alex Esqueda, who owns and operates CrossFit Decimate on the east part of town, says it's a program for everyone.

"The Olympian needs to squat and your grandmother needs to be able to squat, so my program and my coaching approach is just that methodology that the needs of the elite athlete like Tristen or our Masters qualifiers up into their 50s, we have those same needs and we can tailor our training to accomplish all those goals.," says Esqueda.

"I was luckily in that top part which made me the fittest in Colorado," says Tristen Schoun.

Schoun is only 14, and reaching even higher. He and two others are trying to qualify through their age division workout in March and compete in the CrossFit Games. They have to place in the top 10 out of 200 athletes.

"Qualify and win the CrossFit Games, that would be the end goal no matter what," says Schoun.

Chuck Cremeans is not only trying to make it to the games, but he's also kickstarting a CrossFit program abroad. And he says he's learning all he can from Alex when it comes to coaching.

"He pushes me quite a bit. I've been pushed before by various coaches, but coming to this gym it not only has he pushed me as a competitor, but he's pushed me as a coach to learn my craft," says Cremeans.

To properly understand Alex's coaching style and what this sport is all about, I decided to put myself to the test and join them for a workout.

I was moving slow and doing a modified version of the exercises, but did finish my five sets. Whether you are a beginner like me or one of the best in the world like them. Alex says CrossFit is a sport that allows you to keep growing and pushing yourself.

"CrossFit is one of those things, you never win, you can always improve something whether it's your efficiency with movements or your strength or endurance," says Esqueda.

Another key part of training at this level is nutrition and recovery. Tristen works with both 5 Star Nutrition and Fast Fit Foods.
