New charges filed against Pueblo man accused of dismembering mother

Cuevas in court

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The man accused of chopping up his mother and throwing her remains into a dumpster on Pueblo's south side was inside a courtroom for the first time on Friday.

Anthony Cuevas, 36, has participated in pre-trial hearings up to this point, but Friday was the first time he physically stepped into a courtroom in connection with the killing of his mother, 58-year old Mary Cuevas-Garcia.

Cuevas has been charged with first-degree murder. Police made the arrest after they say he was caught on surveillance video throwing a suitcase with his mother's remains into a dumpster at a Pueblo car wash.

A score of Cuevas' family was in attendance in the courtroom to see their family member for the first time since before his arrest back on Oct. 18 in front of the Adolfo's Taco Shop on Highway 50.

It was expected that the prosecution would present witnesses and evidence to the judge during Friday's preliminary hearing. However, a new discovery in evidence has been made and the defense said they need time to examine it.

The judge granted a motion to continue in order to delay the preliminary hearings until April 3.

Through court documents, KRDO discovered that Cuevas is now facing new charges besides first-degree murder.

Cuevas is now facing one count of vehicular eluding and one count of first-degree criminal trespassing.

The vehicular alluding stems from a chase back on Oct. 17, when Cuevas returned to his mother's home on Euclid Avenue while investigators were examining the scene. A chase ensued, but Cuevas was able to escape police west of Lake Pueblo State Park.

The criminal trespassing charge is from October 18th. Court documents say Cuevas knowingly entered into a motor vehicle with intent to commit further thefts.

When Cuevas-Garcia's remains were discovered, police say her hands, feet, and head were missing. It is still unclear if investigators have been able to discover those remains.
