How to recycle correctly after Christmas

(KRDO) -- As you're sorting through those boxes, bags and bows after the holiday, make sure to take a little extra care. There are right and wrong ways to recycle many of the materials we use during the holiday seasons.

"With the increase of online shopping, with places like Amazon, there's definitely an increase of cardboard and boxes coming through the site," said Material Recovery Facility manager Brandon Pelton.

But when it comes to the normal holiday wrapping staples, there are "do's and don'ts" for what belongs in the trash and what can be recycled.

"Definitely all the cardboard and any paper products," said Pelton.

"We just want to make sure they're clean. Glass bottles, plastic bottles. We generally want to stay away from a lot of the shiny wrapping papers, ribbons and bows, Christmas lights. Things of that nature can really cause a lot of problems at the site here."

By recycling correctly at the outset, you're allowing more holiday cheer for those doing the recycling. Plus, it's an easier way to help make the world just a little bit cleaner.
