Decker Fire 100% contained after snowstorm

The Decker Fire is now 100% more than a month after it started a few miles south of Salida.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday morning that the fire is completely contained, and all stage 2 fire restrictions in the county have been cancelled. Fire officials credit recent moisture from the snowstorm for helping cap the containment.

The fire started from lightning on Sept. 8 and had burned more than 8,700 acres as of Wednesday. It had crept up within two miles of Salida over recent weeks.

At least one structure has been lost due to the fire, but no significant injuries have been reported.

Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze thanked residents for their patience and cooperation while the firefighting effort was underway.
