Resorts offer free, discounted ski passes for Colorado kids and first-timers

Skiing and riding is expensive, especially as a family. Thankfully, there are many discounted and free passes for children to make it a bit easier on your wallet.

Here’s how kids — and some adult skiers and riders — can save money during the 2019/2020 ski season.

For the kiddos

If you have a 5th or 6th grader:
5th and 6th grade passport at 22 Colorado ski areas

Who: 5th and 6th graders
Price: Free for 5th graders, $110 for 6th graders
Where: 22 Colorado ski areas
When: 3 days at each resort for 5th graders — a total of 66 days; 4 days at each resort for 6th graders — a total of 88 days

If you’re an Epic Pass holder:
Epic School Kids Colorado Pack at select Vail Resorts

Who: Kindergarten through 5th graders
Price: Free
Where: Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, and Crested Butte
When: Four days at each of the above ski areas, some holiday blackout dates
What else: Includes one free first-timer ski or ride lesson with equipment rental

If you’re an Ikon Pass holder:
Kids Free 2 Ski Pass at Arapahoe Basin

Who: Kids ages six to 12
Price: Free
Where: Arapahoe Basin
When: Anytime, no blackout dates
What else: Registered kids get one 50% off full-day lesson

The full-day lesson includes a full-day all mountain lift ticket, so you can save your child’s two free days for another time
Kids 5 years or younger ski for free every day, just visit the ticket window to claim their free day pass

If you’re looking for a kids’ unlimited ski pass:
Power Kids Pass at Purgatory Resorts

Who: Kids ages 10 or younger receive a free season pass
Price: Free
Where: Purgatory Resort and Hesperus in Colorado and at the company’s other resorts in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah
When: Unlimited days and no blackout dates

For the kids at heart

If you don’t want to buy an Epic or Ikon Pass:
GEMS Cards at 11 Colorado ski areas

Who: Everyone
Price: $30 per card provides you the choice of either
Two 2-for-1 lift tickets OR
Two 30% off lift tickets
Where: Arapahoe Basin, Cooper, Echo Mountain, Eldora, Granby Ranch, Hesperus, Kendal Mountain, Loveland, Monarch, Powderhorn and Sunlight
When: Blackout dates from Dec. 21, 2019 – Jan. 1, 2020

If you’ve never skied before:
Adult First Timer 3-Class Pass at Loveland

Who: Adults who have never skied before
Price: $439 pass is upgraded to a full season pass for free after the completion of 3 lessons
Where: Loveland Ski Area
When: Anytime between Nov. 22, 2019 and March 31, 2019 — just call ahead to register
What else: Includes one full-day lesson, two half day lessons, equipment rental, and season pass

If you AND your kids have never skied before:
Free Learn-To Ski & Ride Program at Powderhorn

Who: Anyone who has never skied before, ages 8 and up
Price: Free
Where: Powderhorn Mountain Resort
When: Three half-day lessons Saturdays and Sundays
What else: Includes lift ticket, equipment rentals, and lesson instruction

Reserve a morning or afternoon lesson in advance. Morning lessons can be upgraded to a full day of skiing for $19
Participants who complete their three free lessons are qualified to purchase a $69 Rookie Season Pass for unlimited skiing for the remainder of the season
