UPDATE: Man shot in south Colorado Springs succumbs to injuries
An adult male who was shot Monday in south Colorado Springs has died due to his injuries, according to a release from CSPD.
At approximately 12:54 a.m. September 9, CSPD officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at the Everyday Convenience Store located at 1502 South Tejon Street. At approximately 1:32 a.m., while officers were processing the scene for evidence, they heard gunshots east of their location.
According to the release, officers checked the area where the shots were fired and discovered an adult male lying in a field located in the 100 block of East Brookside Street. Officers provided aid to the male who appeared to be suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Medical personnel arrived on the scene and transported him to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Detectives from CSPD’s Homicide/Assault Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
This case is being investigated as a homicide while the El Paso County Coroner conducts an examination to make the final determination of the cause and manner of death. This remains an active investigation.
At this time, detectives do not believe that the robbery at Everyday Convenience and the shooting are related.

Police say they heard gunshots while investigating a burglary at a gas station just before 1 a.m. Monday in south Colorado Springs, and officers found a man shot nearby.
Lt. Jim Sokolik with CSPD said authorities discovered the victim with a gunshot wound to the head in a small field nearby. The victim was taken to the hospital and is said to be in critical condition.
Police closed down Brookside St. at South Nevada St. and the street is expected to remain closed well into the afternoon.
Major crimes responded to the scene.
At this time there are no details on any suspects, but police don’t believe there is any current threat to the public.
