Colorado to vote on joining national popular vote compact

Colorado will vote on whether to join an initiative that would commit its nine Electoral College votes to the winner of the national popular vote for president.

The Denver Post reports the question of whether Colorado should join the national popular vote compact will appear on the November 2020 ballot.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office certified Thursday that opponents of the state’s participation in the compact collected enough signatures to require a referendum.

Each participant state in the compact commits to giving its Electoral College votes to the winner of the national popular vote, regardless of the state’s winner.

Fifteen states and the District of Columbia have joined the compact, representing 196 electoral votes. Election to president requires 270 electoral votes.
