On first day back, District 20 talks safety

District 20 has used bond measure funds to build additional security features to help keep your kids safe at school.

For mom Erin Knebel, school safety is a conversation that happens every year.

On Oct. 1, 2017, Knebel watched as a gunman inside the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas opened fire and killed 58 people in front of her.

“I was a victim at the Vegas shooting, so this was really very important to me that they do something at the schools where there is more security as they walk in,” Knebel said.

Mountain Ridge Middle School has already placed several new safety features in their school. That includes a camera and buzzer in the front entryway, vestibules and double doors and two big metal doors blocking the entrance and line of sight into the hallways.

“We want students to come to school to learn and grow. We’ll take care of the safety so they don’t have to worry about it,” said District 20 Public Information Officer Allison Cortez.

These safety measures will, most likely, continue to become more noticeable and more numerous.
