Huge hailstone breaks Colorado all-time record

A giant hail stone that fell Tuesday in Bethune was confirmed to be the largest in Colorado history by the Colorado Climate Center and National Weather Service.

The hail stone that fell northwest of Bethune was measured by the CCC Wednesday and confirmed to be 4.83 inches at its maximum diameter. That exceeds the previous state record of 4.5 inches.

The CCC shared their findings in a Facebook post, and noted that earlier photos indicate that the hail stone was even larger when it first fell. They say there may still be “work to do to formalize and finalize the values.”
