Residents concerned about constant flooding in Security-Widefield neighborhood

People who live on Security Boulevard in Security-Widefield say the street floods every time there’s heavy rain.

They say it’s due to poor drainage, and they want the county to do something about it. We spoke with Jennifer Trujillo, who lives nearby. She said, “It gets bad. I drove through there one time and it was a foot deep.” Trujillo says it doesn’t take much to get the floodwaters rushing, either. “Anytime it’s more than a drizzle, it floods,” she said. Trujillo says it’s up to the County to fix it: “They need to make it a top priority. Safety for everybody. And, it’s a huge mess. It’s a hassle no one should have to deal with.”

We reached out to the El Paso County Department of Public Works to see how workers plan to respond. Department officials told KRDO they’ve received numerous service requests due to recent storms. They say they’ll respond to these requests in the order they’re received, unless the problem is causing danger to the public. Officials said, in the instance on Security boulevard, the drains are working properly, as planned when they were installed back in the 70’s and 80’s. They say, if they receive more complaints, they’ll reassess.
