Suspect involved in fatal Pueblo police shooting identified

The armed suspect who died in a police shooting Thursday night has been identified as Patrick Richard Martinez.

The shooting happened on the 1700 block of E. 5th St., just before 8 p.m. Thursday. Officers were responding to a family disturbance when they say they were confronted by Martinez who attacked them with a knife. One officer opened fire, striking Martinez. He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

No officers were hurt. One officer is now on administrative leave, per standard department protocol.

Neighbors told KRDO this is something they don’t see in their neighborhood often.

Frank Chavez, who lives only a few doors down from the incident said, this kind of crime is becoming more prevalent in the world.

“People are forgetting about respect,” he told KRDO’s Dani Fried. “I wouldn’t want to be a police officer right now. You never know what you’re going to walk into.”

The 10th Judicial District CIT team is now investigating this incident. This is the sixth officer-involved shooting in Pueblo in 2019.
