11-year-old on mini motorcycle killed by crash in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs police say the driver of a mini motorcycle who was killed in a crash Saturday on Academy Boulevard was an 11-year-old boy.

The Colorado Springs Police Department tells us a car driving south on Academy Boulevard in the center lane when the boy on a mini battery-powered motorcycle traveling west on Pace Drive ran a red light. It happened shortly before 9 p.m.

The boy was thrown from the bike and died at the scene. His identity hasn’t been released.

The crash closed down all southbound lanes at Academy Boulevard and Pace Drive as police investigated.

Officers tell us speed and impairment do not seem to be factors.

This marks the 20th fatality crash in Colorado Springs. There were 23 fatalities at this time last year.
