Walsenburg man sentenced to 42 years after killing single mother

A Walsenburg man was sentenced to 42 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Amy Garcia.

Heith Gleason and his son, Gage Gleason, were arrested in New Mexico on Dec. 21 in connection to the shooting of Garcia.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports Garcia’s body was found behind the steering wheel of her burned-out sedan in front of Heith’s home on Dec. 20. Garcia was a single mother of four children.

Authorities were led to Heith and Gage in New Mexico after a witness reported the shooting to Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

A witness had called KRDO shortly after the shooting happened and said they saw a woman who was shot inside her car and who appeared to have been set on fire.

According to the affidavit, a witness reported hearing a gunshot but said Heith came into the residence and reported that he did not kill her.

The affidavit alleges that Gage then went outside with a .22 caliber firearm with a scope and the witness heard more gunshots.

Heith reportedly told the witness that Gage “had earned his man card.”

Gage is scheduled to appear in court in Huerfano County on July 26.

Upon Gage’s arrest, he was booked into the Santa Fe Youth Development Program.
