Periodic closures possible along I-70 after rock slide

Periodic closures are possible along Interstate 70 in western Colorado through the weekend following a rock slide that brought down boulders the size of small SUVs.

The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reports that highway crews are still removing the boulders and patching potholes caused by Tuesday’s slide in Glenwood Canyon. No vehicles were hit.

Some of the rocks need to be blasted into smaller pieces and traffic will be stopped whenever that’s being done.

The Colorado Department of Transportation also expects to bring down loose rocks from the hillside, which will also cause closures. However, the department is waiting for a break in the wet weather to use a crane or helicopter to get a better look at the hillside first. That isn’t expected to happen until Friday.
