Property values spike in El Paso County

The median home price in El Paso County is up 15% in 2019, according to the county assessor’s office.

Values are re-appraised every odd year in accordance with state law, and the new values are based on sales figures from the previous two years.

Due to the housing boom between July 2016 and July 2018, the new values are significantly higher in most cases.

Southeast Colorado Springs saw the largest increase, with values rising more than 30% in some cases, bringing properties back to where they were before the housing crunch that began around 2008.

More established neighborhoods like the Broadmoor and Rockrimmon areas saw the smallest percentage increase, typically less than 10%.

El Paso County Assessor Steve Schlieker appeared on Newschannel 13 at 4:00 on Wednesday to discuss the new values and the impact on taxes that property owners will be billed for later this year.

Schlieker has already hosted a series of informational meetings around El Paso County to explain the re-appraisal process to citizens, and three more meetings will be held in the coming weeks.
