Don’t procrastinate, April 15th is the deadline to file your taxes

Monday is the deadline for filing taxes but there are more than 50 million Americans who still haven’t filed their tax returns.

So why do people procrastinate when filing taxes? R.J. Enga said, “Time flies; next thing you know it’s April 15th.”

Enga is usually one of the people that have to file an extension, but this year, he was on top of it.

“I seem to always file for an extension, but this year [I’m] right on top of it,” said Enga.

But not everyone is ahead of the game like Enga. Kathy Bylkas, the owner of Your Taxlady, says procrastinating is common, but this year is different.

“This year has been more extensions and more complicated because of the new tax laws, they just don’t understand,” said Bylkas. “A lot of them try to do it the old way, and the old way is gone. A lot more procrastinators.”

Steve Burton is one of the millions of people who procrastinated and is now down to his final day.

Burton said, “People tend to wait until the last minute, they don’t want to give their money away. I don’t want to give my money away.”

But if you’re like Steve and haven’t done yours yet, do not worry.

Bylkas said, “At least file your extension if you’re not going to file your actual tax return. It’s only an extension for paper.”

And according to the U.S. Postal service, a paper federal return is considered on time by the IRS if it has enough postage and is postmarked by Monday.

As for the six-month extension, you must file it by Monday as well for it to count. For the state of Colorado, six-month filing extensions are automatic — but the extension only applies to the filing, you’ll still get a penalty if you owe money and pay late.
