Colorado Springs red light cameras see 62 violations in first 11 hours

Red light cameras at two intersections went live on Tuesday. In the first 11 hours, there were 62 red light violations.

The cameras are located at the intersections of East Platte Ave. at Chelton (eastbound approach) and Briargate Blvd. at Lexington Blvd. (westbound approach).

The City says only drivers who enter the intersection after the light has turned red will receive a ticket. Police will review images and video of all infractions before a citation goes in the mail. Drivers will also be able to view the photo and video online.

Red light safety camera violations are a non-moving infraction and will be fined $75. No points will be added to the driver’s record.

If an officer issues a red light citation, it’s a moving violation with a $150 fine and points against the driver’s license.

The City also says the red light program is funded by people who are fined for running red lights. They continue to say that revenue is not the goal and say the goal is to make roads safer and reduce the number of collisions and injuries.

Two more red light cameras will be placed at the intersections of North Carefree Circle and Academy and at Dublin and Academy later this spring.
