Wednesday’s storm causes minimal impacts on Interstate 25 in Pikes Peak region

Traffic problems associated with Wednesday’s winter storm failed to materialize along Interstate 25 between Colorado Springs and Castle Rock as of the early evening.

The most serious known impact was a two-vehicle crash that sent both vehicles off the road southbound on Monument Hill in Monument. No one appeared to be seriously injured.

The freeway remained generally wet throughout the day as snow and rain fell. As temperatures dropped later in the day, a thin layer of slush began to form between Castle Rock and Monument.

Winds remained steady at 20 mph.

Plow crews were on duty but had little or nothing to plow in many cases, not even needing to apply sand and salt because roads were still warm after 70-degree temperatures earlier this week.

There were surprisingly few vehicles on I-25 Wednesday, even during evening rush hour, proving that many drivers heeded advice from authorities to stay home and avoid driving during the storm.
