Man claims self-defense for fatal shooting in Canon City

The Canon City Police Department identified the two people involved in a fatal shooting Monday morning, and the alleged shooter says he fired out of self-defense.

Police say David Draper, 54, was found dead inside a home on W. New York Ave. and Ranald Kenter Chardoul, 67, was found injured outside the home.

Investigators say the shooting appears to be the result of “ongoing issues between the residents of the home.” Chardoul claimed self-defense before he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

A woman was inside the house and is cooperating with investigators, police said. It’s not clear if she corroborated Chardoul’s claim.

No charges have been filed at this point.
