Snow storm hits Denver, drivers see relief in Monument

Denver was hit hard Wednesday by the snow storm. Businesses and government offices were shut down because of the heavy snow. The commute on I-25 south was at a crawl.

Drivers saying the ice and fog added nearly an hour to their drive. ” It’s been very very snowy coming up from Denver,” says Gene Martinez, “It took me about 45 minutes longer.” For Sarah Louden who was driving back from Castle Rock, she said visibility on the roads was awful, ” You could barely see and a lot of people were driving very slow.”

Visibility also very low in Larkspur, but it wasn’t until drivers reached Monument that they were able to find some relief. El Paso County snow plows on standby while the snow steadily fell. As the sun went down, they crews hit the road laying down sand and de-icer to prevent slick conditions.

The further south those drivers headed, the less snow. Colorado Springs snow crews were standing by. Jack Ladley the operations manager with the city’s public works says, ” crews are ready to go if we happen to get if we happen to get more snowfall than we are anticipating we’ll scramble our crews and get out.”

While it didn’t look too bad in the Olympic city, you can’t underestimate Colorado weather, “Mother nature is in charge, she could always throw something at us,” says Ladley. The most dangerous time to be on the roads will be Thursday morning during the morning drive to work. Ladley says, “As the temperatures drop, the winds start blowing we could see black ice. I think that’s something everybody, my crews included, need to be on the lookout for tomorrow mornings commute.”
