Seth Fuqua

When Nick Rothschild found out that Seth Fuqua was 19 years old, he was surprised,”I’m 19 years old actually,” says Vanguard senior Seth Fuqua.

He’d never interviewed a highs schooler that old, “Did 8th grade twice, it was actually to help me – I was a smaller kid and I had a goal of playing college basketball and my parents suggested it to me. They said, if you want to do this we want to give you an extra year to improve and get better in your skills,” says Fuqua.

A purley basketball decision, the second year of 8th grade wasn’t without consequence, “It was hard because I was leaving behind all my friends,” says Fuqua. Or criticism, despite abiding by CHSSA rules, “They didn’t really understand why a good ballplayer would hold himself back. For me, I wasn’t where I wanted to be. That extra year boosted my morale and I was ready for high school ball,” says Fuqua.

With that extra year comes extra responsibility and an expecatation of leadership, “He’s always been more mature than his age or his grade. He wouldn’t tell you himself because he’s humble like that, but becoming more of a leader is definitely something he’s improved in,” says Vanguard head coach Joe Wetters.

As Vanguard is now hunting a 3A title, there’s no second-guessing that 8th grade decision,

“I think I definitely made the right decision, I’m the best basketball player I’ve ever been. This year we have the best chance to win a state title and I wouldn’t be doing that if I wasn’t here, says Fuqua.
