Pueblo police release body camera footage of shootout

Body camera footage released is shedding light on what happened at a shootout that killed one man and put eight Pueblo Police officers in administrative leave.

On Thursday, the department released hours of footage to the media showing incidents that happened right before police were faced with gunfire.

Nearly a year ago, police were called to the 2600 block of 9th Street after a woman reported her ex-partner was threatening to shoot everyone inside the house and had already started shooting outside.

When police got on the scene, they confronted the suspect, Joe Delira-Alires, who shot at them and then got in his car and started to drive away.

He led police on a chase, driving the wrong way in traffic and ended up near Craig Street between 12 &13th.

The body camera footage shows several points of views from officers, some of them chasing after Delira-Alires. Two gunshots are heard going off. The Pueblo County District Attorney report says those gunshots belonged to the suspect.

Next, police react with their gunfire. A few more single shots are heard before police are seen approaching Delira-Alires in an alleyway.

In frames of the video, Delira-Alires is seen looking back, at times with his hand up. The official report says that when he was sitting up and shooting at officers.

Next, dozens of shots are heard going off. Police are heard yelling, “cease fire! Cease fire!” Several police officers slowly approach Delira-Alires to secure his weapon and handcuff him.

Emergency responders are seen jumping in, trying to give Delira-Alires CPR.

Over 60 rounds were shot, and Delira-Alires’ autopsy report shows he was hit at 30 times.

All eight officers were found justified in their actions. Many of them told investigators they kept shooting because Delira-Alires’ hands were still moving and they believed he was reaching for his weapon.
