Wife, lover charged in killing of soldier previously stationed at Fort Carson

A soldier who just moved changed assignments from Fort Carson to Fort Stewart in December is now dead, and investigators say his wife and lover planned the killing for money.

The Army Times reports that Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III was gunned down outside of his father’s home in Michigan on Dec. 31. Berrien County prosecutors say his wife, Spc. Kemia Hassel, was having an affair with another soldier who was stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia.

The other soldier, Jeremy Cuellar, planned with Kemia to kill Tyrone and use his death benefit money from the Army, according to our partners at KDVR.

Investigators believe Cuellar traveled from Fort Stewart to Chicago before the alleged murder and then got directions from Kemia before shooting Tyrone on New Year’s Eve.

Police arrested Kemia and Cuellar last week, and they’ve both been charged with first-degree murder. Cuellar also faces a firearm charge.

Last November, a separate Fort Carson soldier was killed over an affair with another soldier’s wife. The alleged shooter was taken into custody.

We’ve reached out to Fort Carson for information on both Tyrone and Kemia Hassel’s assignment at The Mountain Post. We’ll update this article when more information is available.
