Chase ends with deadly shootout in Pueblo West

One suspect is dead and another suffered life-threatening injuries after a shootout following a chase with Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

We reported when the chase happened Sunday night, and officers said two people were in custody. The sheriff’s office sent an update shortly after noon Monday saying one of the suspects died, and the other is at the hospital.

According to the PCSO, a vehicle fled from officers in Fremont County and nearly hit a Canon City police car at about 10:30 p.m. The vehicle then kept going east on Highway 50.

Pueblo County deputies found the vehicle and started a chase. The vehicle was pushed off the road into an open field near Platteville Blvd. and Matt Drive, but the suspects got back on the road near McClave Drive.

Deputies pushed the vehicle again and caused it to stop near 700 N. Chaparral Drive.

When deputies got near the vehicle, the female driver drove toward a deputy. That’s when the shots were fired. A male passenger was killed, and the female sustained life-threatening injuries.

The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office identified the passenger as 18-year-old Amiliano Apodaca.

The female suspect hasn’t been identified, and the deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave. The shooting is still under investigation.

One neighbor, Cheri Lizer, was shocked to hear the news, saying, “Oh my goodness, oh my goodness. But I think they’ve done a good job of taking care of us because there wasn’t a neighborhood terror.”

Lizer lives right down the road from where it happened and said normally this neighborhood is pretty safe.

“This is a great neighborhood. wonderful neighbors who help when our kids are sick or we pick up each other’s kids, or they run up and down the street with the dogs; it’s a good neighborhood,” said Lizer.

Police say there is currently no danger to the public.
