Meals on Wheels brings holiday joy this Christmas

Dozens of volunteers came to spread the Christmas spirit to Pueblo families during the annual “Meals on Wheels”.

“For the homebound seniors, Christmas Day is just like every day,” said Ron Cortese, who delivers meals to the elderly nearly every day. “They need to get their meals.”

Cortese is just one of thirty drivers sacrificing their holiday to deliver 187 meals. However, that’s not all they come bearing.

“Meals on wheels is delivering smiles along with Merry Christmas joy,” said Jane Schifferdecker, a Meals on Wheels recruiter. “We are giving presents and cards.”

The cards are sent to Meals on Wheels by people all over the county, including local students. Yet, the best gift may not be tangible.

“Our drivers talk to them, make sure they are okay, visit with them a few minutes and give them a present to unwrap cause many of them won’t have one,” said Schifferdecker.

Cortese has been driving with the organization for 13 years .

“I’m just real happy to do it,” he said.
