Procession, memorial takes place for Las Animas County deputy

The procession for fallen Las Animas County Deputy Matthew Moreno will take place Thursday morning, followed by a law enforcement memorial service.

Sgt. Moreno was killed in a three-car crash on Wednesday, Dec. 12, on Highway 12. He was one of three to die in the crash. A civilian, Taelor Roybal, and Roybal’s three-year-old son, Ezekiel Valdez, also died.

The procession will start at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 11:15 a.m. and work its way south on Grand Ave. ending at Memorial Hall.

It is a walking procession and will impact traffic crossing N. Grand Ave. and S. Grand Ave. between W. 13 th Street and N. Union Ave.

Expect heavy traffic in the area between 11 a.m. and noon.

Public parking in the area will be limited for most of the day. Parking is restricted on N. Grand Ave. Public parking for the memorial service will be available in the Main Street Parking Garage (118 S. Main St.).
