Fallen Colorado Springs veterans honored during Wreaths Across America event

Dozens of people came together Saturday morning at Memorial Gardens Cemetary in Colorado Springs to honor veterans who have died.

Hundreds of wreaths were set at each veteran’s gravestone to remember their service during the holiday season.

The veterans’ names were spoken aloud as the wreath was laid down and the volunteers saluted them.

Among those helping to lay wreaths was Doherty High School Navy JROTC members, who said this event is all about honoring those who’ve been lost.

“I think it’s nice when people pay their respects to veterans because they fought and protected our country so the least we can do is come out here and lay wreaths on their cemeteries,” Isabell Atkins said.

DJ Cox and his son, Steve Cox, were helping as well. They’re both U.S. Air Force Veterans.

“This is one moment when we have a chance to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices that the military makes their entire lives. Not only serving, traveling around the world and doing the job and coming home,” DJ Cox said.

The ceremony at Memorial Gardens was part of the Wreaths Across America which honors veterans buried in cemeteries across the nation by laying wreaths at their grave each December.
