Original Story:
Christmas may be weeks away, but one Colorado Springs Family is in need of a Christmas miracle.
A 16-year-old son emailed KRDO earlier this week on behalf of his mother who he says they need a little help this holiday season.
“It just scares me that we could possibly be out on the streets,” said Kory Shamburger, a student at Air Academy High School.
Tamara Smith, is a single mother of four. On Monday, they are all required to leave their apartment home due to unpaid rent.
The family moved from California one year ago. In Colorado Springs, they found new work and a fresh start, b ut a hiking accident led to disaster.
“We took a lot of pictures we were having so much fun but on the way down I slipped and fell,” said Smith. “Once I broke my leg I wasn’t able to work.”
Smith hasn’t been able to work for 12 weeks, and money was already tight before the medical bills.
However, things got worse when Kory found an eviction notice from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office attached to the apartment door telling him and his family to vacate the premises in just a few days.
“I saw the note on the door as I came home from school, and then it was like you have until Monday, ” said Shamburger. “Not only will I be evicted but where am I going to put my things where am I going to go?” asked Smith. “Whose gonna be able to take in me and my family cause I have 4 children?” So That’s when Kory reached out to KRDO for help granting his mother’s Christmas wish, help to get back on their feet. “She just works her butt off so much.. she never wants to see us in the streets or not having a place to stay,” said the 16-year old Shamburger. “I just want her to be happy.”
If you would like to help make the Smith family’s Christmas a little happier you can donate at their GoFundMe page.
