Juvenile arrested in connection to small fire at Sand Creek High School, no injuries reported

UPDATE: The Colorado Springs Police Department arrested a suspect Wednesday in a fire that happened at Sand Creek High School around 10:27 a.m.

Officers say they heard fire alarms going off inside the school and immediately called in the fire department.

School Resource Officers were able to locate a fire in the boy’s bathroom near the lower west wing of the building. They were able to put the fire out using a fire extinguisher.

All students and staff were evacuated from the building and the Falcon School District 49 decided to cancel school for the rest of the day as first responders looked over the damage and air quality.

After a review of security footage, the SRO was able to identify a 14-year-old male as a possible suspect. The male was taken to the Spring Creek Juvenile Detention Facility and his parents were contacted.

He has been charged with First Degree Arson and Interference with staff, faculty, or students of educational institutions.

A small fire at Sand Creek High School was the hot topic among students who emailed their parents about it Wednesday morning.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to the small fire in a bathroom; there are no reports of it spreading beyond there. It was out as soon as firefighters arrived.

Firefighters haven’t yet said what caused the fire, and District 49 hasn’t released any information.

No injuries have been reported.
