Snowy roads in Woodland Park

Woodland Park transformed into a winter wonderland overnight. Snowpacked roads made travel slippery. Chunks of ice made it slick when changing lanes. Even still, some of the people we talked to were positive about the snow.

“Oh I just love it. You know it is so wet and so heavy and it’s very icy and we’ve been slipping and sliding around but we love it. We need the moisture that bad. We are happy people today,” said Teller County resident Nancy Thompson.

“I love the snow! We were inside, built a huge fire, ate all the food we wanted, watched the deer come by. I love it,” said Teller County resident Fred Stevens.

Meanwhile, others – like Jeff Mattson – say they just tolerate the snow, but live in Colorado for the sunshine.

“Living in Colorado your whole life you just get used to the snow. I don’t really like the cold myself, but I’m more of a warm weather person but hey – being in Colorado my whole life, what can you do?” said Teller County resident Jeff Mattson.

It’s not uncommon to see snowstorms like this in the month of October in the Pikes Peak region as many of us are well aware. We’ve seen some higher accumulations on the cooler surfaces like grassy areas. We got about six inches of snow accumulation at this particular park in Woodland Park – somewhat surprising considering how early on it is in the season where we have relatively higher sun angles. So all of this is pretty impressive.

The snow has created quite a gorgeous landscape. Frosted in a fresh layer of snow, the trees in Teller County look spectacular. The foothills surrounding Woodland Park are laced in snow, making for a breathtaking view. The serene park stopped us in our tracks – it was so pretty coated with the snow. With the potential for an “El Niño” winter, we could be seeing this kind of scene more frequently.
