Snowy Sunday follows sunny Saturday in southern Colorado

The second snowstorm of the season — and of the week — moved into the Pikes Peak region Sunday morning.

Saturday saw seasonal highs in the 60s and 70s, but that all changed by Sunday morning. Areas south of Denver and around Monument saw snow flurries and wet roads.

Later in the morning, snow began accumulating on the ground in the Pikes Peak region.

There were at least three rollover crashes reported Sunday, including one at the intersection of Powers and Fontaine boulevards (no one injured) and another on Interstate 25 near Briargate Parkway (injuries unknown).

The arrival of winter weather coincides with an increase in occupancy at the two main homeless shelters in Colorado Springs.

The Springs Rescue Mission, with a capacity of 300, has had 317 people sleeping on beds and mats.

“We’ve been turning away 20 people every night and referring them to other shelters,” said spokesman Travis Williams. “We hate turning people away, but we’re really straining our capacity.”

Williams said the mission will add 140 beds before the end of next month; a similar increase is planned for the Salvation Army shelter.

“The Salvation Army also has been at or near capacity,” he said.

Overall, there looked to be light accumulations of snow throughout the day in Colorado Springs and around Pueblo with relatively greater snow totals in Monument and Woodland Park. Most areas in Southern Colorado will have temperatures in the 20s to low 30s through early Monday morning.

Quieter weather is expected for the rest of the week. Temperatures stay cold (yet sunny) on Monday, and temperatures will gradually be increasing throughout the week. Dry weather is forecast after Sunday.
