Colorado Springs police identify man killed during attempted break-in

Colorado Springs police identified the person who was killed during an attempted break-in Saturday night.

According to Springs police, 30-year-old Houston Malachai Cookson was shot in the torso while “attempting to gain entry” into a residence on Flintridge Circle.

Cookson was found with multiple stolen items from an unrelated incident, police said. Cookson has a history of criminal charges out of Salina, Kansas, including drug possession, trespassing, and parole violations.

The shooting is still under investigation, and police haven’t identified the resident at the house who found Cookson and shot him. Police say the case will be given to the District Attorney’s Office to review.
