Colorado Springs police installing, testing gunshot detection system

The Colorado Springs Police Department is testing out a new system that uses audio sensors to detect gunshots and provide officers with precise location information.

It’s probably just coincidence that the new system is being installed in a year that’s on pace to be the deadliest in the city’s history, but the department says the information will help first responders find potential victims quicker.

CSPD says the system uses a network of sensors that pick up when a gun is fired and then pinpoint the location. While it’s effective, the department still wants the public to report gunshots.

The first sensors are going in around the Valley Hi neighborhood, near Fountain Boulevard and Chelton Road, due to having the highest concentration of reported gunfire. The sensors can be easily moved, however, so the department can reposition them if other areas see concentrated gunfire.

A round of tests will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday. CSPD says the controlled tests will consist of a sequence of gunshots; don’t worry, police are making sure no bullets will be fired into the air or ground at a danger to residents. People may hear the shots in the Park Hill and Pikes Peak Park neighborhoods as well.
