Colorado mother makes plea to end drunk driving

In all of Colorado counties, El Paso County had the highest amount of people killed in an impaired related accident in 2017. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 29 people were killed because of an impaired related crash.

Kelly Sifford’s son was one of those statistics a few years back. Her son, Kyle Dunbar, was killed on November 6, 2015.

“He was just always there to help people and I miss him beyond words,” Sifford said.

Sifford told KRDO that a drunk driver blew through a stop sign at Ellicott Highway and Highway 94, going between 70 and 80 miles per hour. She said the driver slammed into her son around 6 in the morning when authorities pronounced him dead at the scene.

“I never dreamed it would be Kyle, because you don’t think somebody’s going to be drunk at six in the morning,” Sifford said.

That’s why Sifford said she’s walking with Kyle’s now 9-year-old son Carson this weekend in the “Walk Like MADD” event. This year marks the tenth anniversary for the event, ran through the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

“It’s a preventable, crime, I mean there’s no reason,” Sifford said. “To me it’s not an accident, You deliberately get in your vehicle and drive drunk.”
